THE VICAR'S LETTER

Tuesday, 21st November 1972

Dear Parishioners,
There are many demands upon the space available for this issue of the magazine, especially for Dr. Pemberton's very important article about St. Peter's organ. I must need, therefore, be rather brief.
The tempo of the pre-Christmas season is rapidly building up to fever pitch. The Church begins its own preparation with Advent Sunday. Like last year, we shall be having an Advent Procession at 6.30 pm on December 3rd. Again this will be by candle-light, but I am pleased to say that we expect to have real hand candles with drip-trays for choir and congregation.
With Christmas Day being on a Monday this year, we are taking the opportunity of having the Church Carol Service on the afternoon of Christmas Eve beginning at 3 pm. The Church Choir are hoping to go carol singing in the town after the service.
The midnight eucharist on Christmas Eve will begin at 11.45 pm.
Last year the Christingle Service was a great success, even if somewhat disorganised - one of those rare occasions when the church was taken by surprise by the numbers of children and adults who came. This year we shall be ready and hope that many more will come and take part. Further on in the magazine you will find instructions for making a Christingle.
We are all looking forward to keeping the Feast of Christ's birth with more joy than ever, and we hope that all who call themselves Christians will join us.
Mr. Emerson and I wish everybody in Barton, and our readers beyond the town, a very happy Christmas.
Yours sincerely,

Darrel Speedy

MAKE A CHRISTINGLE and bring it wth you on Christmas Day at 4 pm
A christingle is made of two basic parts. An orange - representing the World, and a candle inserted in the top - to represent the Light of the World, Jesus Christ. There are usually added sticks, stuck round the top with nuts etc fixed on the ends to represent the fruits of the earth. Four cocktail sticks in the bottom are also very useful - they make good legs for the Christingle to be used as a table decoration afterwards.
