The Church in Barton

Below records the attempt, for which the held archives cover the two years of 1972-1973, to produce a community magazine centred on St Mary's Church, Barton-upon-Humber. It was a time of transition: the creation of Humberside, the coming of the Humber Bridge, and thoughts that Barton might end up as a suburb of Hull. It was also the time of the closure of St. Peter's, the transfer of its organ to St. Mary's, the argument for the closure of St. Chad's, the prospect of resources of the Church of England being squeezed, the failure of the national Anglican-Methodist merger scheme, and uncertain local ecumenical contacts; and yet this era reflects still the assumptions (now surely gone) that generations of local people connected with the church through the active rather than simply formal links with local schools, through the bustling Sunday School and through the choir that was a busy central activity for young and older. Nowadays organised religion seems more specialised and the community link, whilst still more present here than for some churches, is not so obvious.
