“A dress for Sarah and a dress for Hagar”

Sarah and Hagar Embroidered outfits

Vivienne Rowett writes:
Here I had in mind the things Hagar and Sarah have in common, which are often the very things that divide them too; and I am mindful of the long history of the three ‘Abrahamic faiths’ which claim descent from these women, with its sometimes bitter rivalries. I also consider the mendings of these divisions, friendships that break down barriers, here summed up in the line ‘Perhaps we could meet for coffee?’ Themes of seeing and (over)hearing are to the fore in these complex narratives, communication between humans, and between the human and the divine.

I work with cloth and machine-stitch simply because these media are ones through which I naturally think and express myself, and have in mind the way textiles and cloth scraps have linked humans together both through and across time and space. (Thinking of the recent Foundling Hospital exhibition).
